Perched in the province of West Java, Indonesia, Mount Padang never ceases to intrigue researchers and captivate history buffs. Known by the poetic name “Mountain of Awakening”, this hill has long been seen as a simple natural formation. But now, recent research has turned this vision upside down, suggesting that Gunung Padang could well hide more than just a hill. These discoveries pose compelling questions about our understanding of the human past and what our ancestors were capable of.
A pyramid buried beneath our feet?
In 2018a team led by Danny Hilman Natawidjajaa senior geologist at the Geotechnology Center of the Indonesian Institute of Science, has launched a hypothesis that is causing quite a stir. After searching between 2011 et 2014they argue that Gunung Padang is not just a hill but actually an immense pyramid built by man. To support their idea, they relied on cutting-edge techniques such as ground penetrating radar (GPR) or seismic tomography (ST), which revealed a complex structure in several layers.
Data shows that Gunung Padang is made of different stages of construction. The oldest layer, called Unit 4would date from 25,000–14,000 BCE and would have started as a volcanic hill sculpted by man. Then comes theUnit 3 (of 7900 to 6100 BCE) with its “columnar rocks arranged like bricks”. L'Unit 2 (of 6000 to 5500 BCE) reveals a more elaborate masonry addition, while the last phase, theUnit 1 (of 2000 to 1100 BCE), shows even more advanced engineering.
Surprising finds that shake up our history
The excavations also revealed hidden cavities or chambers in the structure, suggesting that part of the site was deliberately buried several times. These discoveries could shake up our usual timeline of human evolution and shed light on the incredible architectural talents of ancient builders.
However, not everyone is convinced by these findings. The study originally published in the journal Archaeological Prospection was withdrawn by Wiley following criticism of its methodology. Critics point to a lack of solid evidence to support the team's proposed interpretations.

Despite the heated debates surrounding these discoveries, Gunung Padang remains an invaluable treasure for future research. The discovery of the hidden chambers opens the door to further explorations which could teach us even more about this mysterious structure.
