Intel unveils its processors optimized for AI applications and gaming

During CES 2025, which runs until January 10 in Las Vegas, Intel lifted the veil on the generation of Core Ultra 200 “Arrow Lake” chips suitable for laptops. While the Core Ultra 200H is particularly suitable for high-end PC users for light applications and games, the Core Ultra 200HX is aimed more at gamers and professionals.

Up to 24 cores at 5.5 GHz for Core Ultra 200HX

As for the Core Ultra 200H processor family, the flagship processor, the Intel Core 9 Ultra 285H, has 16 cores (6 performance cores, 8 efficiency cores, and 2 low-power cores), with a speed of 5.4GHz. It integrates 8 Intel Arc GPUs, which notably makes it possible to support the firm’s XeSS technology, designed to improve the sharpness of images using artificial intelligence algorithms.

The Core Ultra 200HX range of chips goes a little further, with processors ranging from 14 cores for the Core Ultra 5 235HX and 245HX to 24 cores for the Ultra 9 285HX reference model. The latter includes 8 performance cores and 16 efficiency cores, at a maximum rate of 5.5 GHz. This family only includes 4 GPU cores, as it was designed to work alongside external graphics cards from AMD and Nvidia. The Santa Clara firm apparently wanted to emphasize AI functionalities, with an integrated 13 TOPS NPU.

Effective enough to breathe new life?

Intel has not given details on which PC models will be equipped with these new processors. However, they should be available by the end of the first quarter. It remains to be seen how these chips will stand out from those of Qualcomm and AMD, and whether these new products will help turn around the company, which has been in great difficulty lately. At the end of last year, Pat Gelsinger, then CEO of Intel, was forced to retire by his board of directors.
