This year it will already five years that the PS5 has arrived on the market. Remember, it was in November 2020 in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, causing numerous concerns on supply chains before two years of shortages and stock-outs. Since then, everything has returned to normal, and the PS5 is starting to sell in pallets, already reaching 65 million consoles sold.
While on average, a console generation lasts seven years, Sony does not seem to be in a hurry to release its next PS6. On the other hand, the Japanese manufacturer does not intend to delay the arrival of the latter and will not use the recent PS5 Pro to do so.
The PS6 will arrive at the right time
It is as part of the 30th anniversary of the PlayStation brand that Hideaki Nishino, CEO of PlayStation, discussed the future of the brand and in particular the arrival of the PS6, during an interview with the Japanese magazine Famitsu. It should be the next console that will succeed and replace the PS5. Obviously, SonyI don't plan to rush thingsbut do not don't plan to delay them either.
The PS6 is currently in development phase and it is inevitably technological innovation that will dictate the tempo. Because, for PlayStation, the importance of timing in the launch of a new console is very important: “The timing of the launch of new hardware is related to the time frame in which the technology evolves and the time frame in which we are able to implement that technology”. This statement means that PlayStation engineers are already actively working on the PS6 and that the latter will not be delayed to make more room for the PS5 and the recent PS5 Pro
Thus, the development of the PS6 is driven by the evolution of technology and not by the evolution of PS5 sales. In addition, five years after its release, the Sony console is far from having reached its limits and can offer developers many more years to create many games.
For the PS5, Sony thus adopts the same strategy as with the PS4 and PS4 Pro. Moreover, last September, a new report from Reuters confirmed that Sony had entered into a new partnership with AMD to equip its future consoles with a backward compatible AMD chip. This suggested that the PS6 would also be a backwards compatible console.
Finally, Hideaki Nishino also confirms that PlayStation's objective is to ensure smooth transitions from one generation of consoles to the next, allowing you to take advantage of previous consoles at the same time as new ones are launched on the market. The PS6 should therefore arrive in the coming years and the PS5, as well as the PS5 Pro, should continue to co-exist allowing games to be released on both media: “We would like to develop our business by combining the longevity of sustainable products with new technologies”.
Of course, Nishino does not give more details regarding the future of PlayStation and the arrival of a next console. If we look at the release history of previous consoles, we can easily consider a release of the PS6 for 2027 or 2028.
