YouTube is preparing a revolutionary new option for its users. A button could change the way you access videos, making navigation faster and tailored perfectly to your preferences.
YouTube has been able to evolve to meet the needs of its users, particularly with tools like Picture-in-Picture mode. Widely deployed since the end of 2023, this floating mini-player allows you to continue watching videos while browsing other applications. This year, an even more modular version has been introduced to offer more flexibility and customization. These adjustments show the platform’s commitment to improve its functioning.
Today, YouTube is going further by testing a floating action button baptized “Play something” (literally, “Throw something”). The latter was spotted in the version 19.50 of the application Android. It is located in bottom right of the screenjust above the navigation bar. Designed with white text on a black background to maximize its visibility, it therefore allows instantly start a video without having to browse the home page or perform a search. This is very practical on public transport, for example.
YouTube simplifies access to videos with the Play something button
When you press the button, a video starts automatically in a vertical drive which is similar to that of Shorts. However, this mode is not limited to short videos: it can display classic content in a optimized interface with clearly visible controls to like, comment or share. The latter seems to rely on users’ history and preferences to offer relevant content. Note that it disappears as soon as the mini-player is activated in order to leave the screen clearer.
This initiative is part of a series of recent changes at YouTube, but not everything is aimed at improving user comfort. For example, the reader integrated into the web pages was deliberately degraded, with the removal of the logo and links to the platform. These adjustments, intended to better control advertisingshow that the platform seeks to reconcile its economic imperatives with its innovations intended to retain your audience.
