OpenAI's new o3 model could cost astronomical sums: more than $1,500 per request.
After OpenAI's announcements relating to its new language model called o3, questions surrounding the cost of its use surface.
A technological advance that costs an arm and a leg
Presented as a revolution compared to the AI models currently on the market, o3 would be distinguished in particular by its thinking and logical path capabilities which outperform other models.
Such a level of thinking power seems to make the financial costs of this new model skyrocket. The information, reported by Numerama according to Arc Prize, an organization specializing in the development of software to evaluate the capabilities of AI models, was able to obtain early access to o3 to carry out benchmarks.
Far ahead of its predecessors, o3 would be a financial pit for OpenAI. A request in its advanced mode can cost the firm more than $1,500. Conversely, the o1-mini model costs around 20 cents per question.
The future of ChatGPT in the hands of o3-mini?
More than settling for the most expensive version of the o3 model, Arc Prize also estimates the cost of the restricted o3 version at around $20 per request. Although more affordable, it is difficult to imagine that the o3 model – in restricted mode or not – could be successful with the general public at this price.
This is probably why Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, insists on the existence of three versions just for o3-mini, the prices of which should be much more accessible.
The restricted and advanced GPT-o3 models could, however, find use in the scientific environment, where complex questions and calculations require extraordinary thinking power to be resolved.
