11 years ago, Apple unveiled a €4,000 “trash can”

The launch of new Apple products is not always a great success. If the beginnings of the iPhone or the iPad are remembered as global commercial successes, the Apple Vision Pro, marketed last February, is far from having experienced the same fate.

Even more recently, it is the Mac mini M4 which has caused a lot of ink to flow. If the performance is there, it’s a small detail in the design of the computer that bothers thousands of people. A problem that Apple has already encountered in the past, notably when the Mac Pro was released in 2013.

A unique design in the world

11 years later, there is still no consensus on the design of this desktop computer. Described as “trash” by some, it was actually a true feat of engineering. With this very innovative cooling system, the 2013 Mac Pro was very quiet, even for the most complex tasks.

All its components were placed around the cylinder, the center was a giant fan system, collecting air from below before circulating it throughout all the circuits. This permanent current of air then flows above the device. An endless cooling cycle which allowed the Mac Pro to be very efficient for the time.

A divisive product

Presented by Apple during WWDC, this computer was described at the time as a major innovation. Apple vice-president Phill Schiller is particularly known for a short phrase about him “we can’t innovate anymore? mon cul » (can’t innovate anymore, my ass)

A diatribe against the critics who trashed the previous Mac Pro. They believed that Apple had reached a glass ceiling. Apple was, according to them, incapable of offering truly interesting products for their professional users.

This 2013 Mac Pro will prove them partly right. The lack of connectivity made the product unpopular in just a few weeks. Finally, we will have to wait until 2019 for Apple to present another Mac Pro, with a much more conventional design and close to the one we know today.
