A US patent application has revealed details of a projector and glasses that could be used to produce holograms. The document describes the technology of a new display device for broadcasting extended reality content. The application includes diagrams showing examples in 2D and 3D.
Samsung appears to be working on a hologram projector with smart glasses, according to a recently published US patent application. The display device has already appeared in patents in Korea, and is also described as an augmented reality (AR) gadget.
Samsung’s patent describes a “projector” type device that can produce images of augmented reality content, such as holograms. The technology behind the device includes a liquid crystal display panel, which acts as a spatial light modulator, coupled with a background light source. The patent states that the projector is designed to be portable and can be mounted on a ceiling or wall. It also mentions that the screen could be “assembled into structures”, without further explanation.
It comes with a wearable “glasses” type device containing a similar display device inside the frame. One of the drawings in the patent application shows 2D projected images, while another illustrates the 3D projection of a book. It’s unclear when Samsung might launch this extended reality content device or any other product capable of producing holograms. Another recent report suggests that Samsung will launch AI smart glasses in 2025, competing with the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses (currently $299 at Amazon).
