over-the-top charging on Pixels, what’s the point…

Today, we’re talking about a new feature in Google Pixel smartphones that could extend the life of your batteries.

This is bypass charging, with a charging limit of 80%.

Want to know how it works and how to activate it? Here we go!

why limit the load to 80%?

A battery operates on charge and discharge cycles. And each cycle wears out its components a little more. Concretely, if you often let your phone completely discharge or stay at 100% for too long, its ability to hold a charge decreases over time.

Google has therefore implemented a new function to prevent the battery from undergoing unnecessary cycles when plugged in. Once the charge reaches 80%, the phone is powered directly from the outlet, bypassing the battery. This reduces wear and tear and helps extend battery life.

But this functionality has a second practical benefit. Yes because the phone is less used, and remains cooler.

The phone heats up less

This feature is ideal if you usually leave your phone plugged in, for example on a desk or during an extended streaming session.

With the battery remaining at 80%, the phone heats up less. And this is not only beneficial for the battery, but also for the internal components.

For example, if you use your phone for a long video call or network games, like “FIFA 24”, this feature could really save your device.

How to activate this function?

To benefit from this option, make sure your Pixel is up to date with the December update, which is still rolling out.

Next, head to Settings, then the Battery section. You will find an option called Load Optimization. Activate it and voilà, your phone will automatically limit charging to 80% when plugged in.

To summarize, this override charging feature is a real asset if you’re looking to preserve the life of your phone. And if you’re wondering if other brands are doing the same, know that the latest iPhones offer a similar feature.
