Omega unveiled a new version of the First Omega in Space a few days before the launch of the Speedmaster Pilot.
Basing itself as always on its rich past to offer us new Speedmasters, this new reference is no exception to the rule.
So I invite you on a short space-time journey before we embark on the discovery of this 1st Omega in Space.
You can also discover this model on the Omega website: New 1st Omega in Space.
Summary History of the First Omega in Space
First of all, I would like to remind those who don’t know that the Speedmaster appeared in the Omega catalog in 1957.
Speedmaster: from racing circuits to the Moon
It was originally a chronograph watch intended for speed enthusiasts.
The Speedmaster is also equipped with an external tachymeter bezel – a first in watchmaking at a time when the practice consisted of printing the tachymeter scale on the outer periphery of the dial.
The rather happy ups and downs of this Omega watch’s life quickly took it away from the asphalt and made it embrace a career in space alongside NASA.
In 1969, it even became the first watch worn on the Moon, on the wrist of Buzz Aldrin.
But let’s return to the model that interests us today: it is a version inspired by the second generation Speedmaster released in 1959 under the reference CK2998.
Speedmaster CK2998: the first Omega watch in Space
Beyond its aesthetics, which I will return to in a moment, the CK2998 acquired its fame on the wrist of Walter M. Schirra who wore his personal Speedmaster on October 3, 1962 aboard the Sigma 7 capsule when he performed as part of its mission to circle the Earth six times (model below).
The CK2998, popular with collectors and Speedmaster enthusiasts in general, will make its first return to the watchmaking scene in 2012 in a version combining black dial, black bezel and brown leather strap.
In 2015, it returned in a version equipped with a Sedna gold case housing an opaline dial with brown sub-counters and, in 2016, it appeared in a limited edition in steel with blue bezel and opaline dial with blue sub-counters.
Finally, in 2018, Omega offers us a panda dial version.
Here is the latest version today!
