Many smartphones today allow you to limit the recharge of their battery to 80% in order to extend their lifespan. But what really happens once this limit is reached?
After launching an option to monitor the temperature of its phones in real time, Google is rolling out an option to limit battery charging to 80%. If we can naturally think that the charge stops once the number is reached, the reality is more complex.
Optimize energy
Once the update is complete, your Pixel should have two charging options: the first allows you to have adaptive charging to quietly reach 100%. The other limits the charge to 80%. Android Authority was able to conduct some tests to see what was going on behind this last option.
The first tests indicate that the smartphone actually cuts off its charging, but the phone still recognizes the presence of the charger as we can see in the image below.

How your Pixel calibrates its battery on its own to extend its lifespan
The teams ofAndroid Authority noticed an interesting fact: when using a phone plugged in with a battery that had reached 80% charge, they noticed rapid variations in power. This suggests that the phone would directly use the power provided by the charger, rather than that of the battery.
Excellent news for your smartphone, because this approach preserves the health of the battery and limits the risk of overheating, especially during prolonged use, such as for video games.
