Is this the effect Weighs on Start? Very recently, our columnist Maxime Johnson recommended that you not play Balatrothe card game from LocalThunk, if you value your free time. Obviously, you didn’t follow his advice, because the game is experiencing a big resurgence in popularity.
Well, maybe I’m exaggerating the influence of Weighs on Start here. In reality, it is mainly thanks to its numerous nominations for the Game Awards that Balatro saw its sales explode. And like many of you, I let myself be tempted. Result? I’m as addicted as you are.
According to data fromAppMagica tool specialized in the analysis of the mobile applications market, Balatro is experiencing an impressive resurgence in popularity. As a reminder, the game was released in February on PC and consoles, but its mobile version was only launched in September.

The site PocketGamer.Bizbased on these data, reports that Balatro generated over $1 million in sales in its first week on mobile. If the figures subsequently fell slightly, they started to rise again with the game’s nominations for the Game Awards on November 18.
In total, Balatro would have exceeded 4 million dollars in sales. Note that these figures only concern sales of the game, since it contains neither microtransactions nor advertisements. That said, it is also accessible via the Apple Arcade subscription.
And it’s not just on mobile that the game is a hit. On Steam, Balatro now sits at the top of the ranking of the most played games on the Steam Deck portable console, climbing 5 places compared to the previous week. It also occupies the 17th position of the most popular games in Canada on Steam at the time of writing.
On the rewards side, Balatro is up for five awards at The Game Awards, including the prestigious title of Game of the year. The game has already won two awards at the Golden Joystick Awards: Indie Game of the Year et Revelation of the year.
