Sram unveils the S-1000, little brother of the GX T-Type ⋆ Vojo

A year after the launch of the GX version of its new AXS Eagle T-Type groupset, Sram has unveiled an even more accessible version, called the S-1000. Like the more luxurious versions unveiled in the last two years (XX, XO and GX), this new groupset further signals the disappearance of the derailleur hanger. First information:

This is a new product that had caused quite a stir: the new Eagle AXS transmission without a derailleur hanger, codenamed T-Type, was unveiled by Sram in March 2023… before being released a few months later in a GX version, which is more accessible but follows the same general principle, that of Fullmount, more commonly referred to as “T-Type”.

As a reminder, “T-Type” is the code name to identify this new generation of AXS transmission (understand wireless electronics), which refers to the removal of the derailleur hanger by Sram and the direct mounting of the derailleur on the frame. For the brand, this eliminates the main factors of derailleur malfunction (bent derailleur hanger, poor adjustment, etc.) and thus offers a more reliable and comfortable solution on the ground but also much easier to adjust and mount.

Aware that this new feature may raise many questions, we offered you several articles and videos when the first groups using this new technology were released last March, as well as a dedicated article when the GX group was released. We encourage you to consult them to learn more, and we focus here on the information relating to the new group called S-1000.

Sram Eagle AXS T-Type S-1000

With this new S-1000 groupset, Sram’s mission is ” to expand the T-Type to a greater number of drivers ” and to offer an even more accessible version than the GX group… while retaining the ideas, inspirations and operating principles of the more high-end versions.

The Sram S-1000 will not be available for sale in the aftermarket, it is reserved for original equipment.

Note however that this new Sram S-1000 groupset will not be available for sale in aftermarket at first, but only reserved for original equipment (in other words, fitted as standard on complete bikes). At this stage, it will therefore not be possible to directly obtain an S-1000 groupset to replace your current assembly, but Sram explains that it is working on the option.

All the components of this new group are compatible with the rest of the T-Type ecosystem, and it will thus be possible to mix the different range levels for whoever wants.

Sram S-1000 Derailleur

The Sram S-1000 derailleur benefits from the same construction as the GX model. Unlike the XX and XO models, this architecture is mainly noticeable in the better integration of the battery. This placement is so much more discreet that one would almost wonder why Sram did not opt for this solution on the high-end versions.

For the rest, we find the same characteristics as on the versions previously tested: easy to install on the bike and adjust but also to disassemble the derailleur itself and replace spare parts (cage, external part of the parallelogram, etc.). The only notable difference compared to the GX is on the side of the black anodized finish as well as the more simplistic cage retention system (namely a friction system, and not a hydraulic clutch system as on the more high-end groups).

It should also be noted that this entry-level derailleur is compatible with the Sram AXS application but also with the Flight Attendant, an electronic suspension system from RockShox.

Cassette Sram XS-1270

Without knowing the price or weight difference between this XS-1270 cassette and the XS-1275 (namely the one in the GX group), it’s hard to differentiate these two options as they look so similar! This XS-1270 cassette benefits from the same 10-52t gearing as well as X-Sync technology and these paths directly engraved in the sprockets to perfectly guide the chain in its movements.

Sram S-1000 Crankset

In a forged aluminum body, the S-1000 crankset is intended to be robust and reliable, which is reflected in its shape and finishes that are a little less fine than its big brothers. On the other hand, we find the shape of the cranks designed to limit wear due to friction from shoes. Five crank lengths are in the catalog (namely 155, 160, 165, 170 and 175mm).

As with the GX model, the S-1000 crankset is compatible with a removable bashguard, which fits into the star of the chainring. You can choose to mount one, two or none, and these are identical to those of the GX and XO models and therefore interchangeable.

A version intended for VTTAE equipped with an ISIS interface is also offered by Sram, still with five crank lengths (150, 155, 160, 165 and 170mm).

Since this is only an original equipment option at this stage, no weight or price has been communicated by the brand. We look forward to getting our hands on a Sram S-1000 groupset to discover and experience any differences in the field. We will be sure to keep you informed in a dedicated article.
