A year ago, the release of PlayStation Portal defied predictions. The PS5 accessory dedicated to remote gaming quickly became a hit, to the point that pre-orders were phenomenally successful, to the point of overshadowing the brand's other accessories… and the PS5 Pro! Today, the PlayStation Portal finally welcomes a long-awaited feature and that could make the accessory even more interesting!

The PlayStation Portal, a PS5 accessory that was all the rage

Since the launch of its new generation of home consoles, Sony has somewhat taken a liking to the month of November. Generally, this time of year is often synonymous with a new hardware release. For example, this year, it was the marketing of the boosted little sister of the PlayStation 5, namely the PS5 Pro. However, we must not forget that the PS5 ecosystem had already expanded, in November 2023, with the launch of… PS Portalan accessory dedicated to remote-play whose architecture gave the strong impression of a DualSense cut in two by a screen.

For a long time, players wondered about the true ambitions of this accessory, thinking, for example, that it was a portable console like the PSP could be. Ultimately, the unclear communication around the PS Portal did not harm it. Against all expectations, the sales figures even surprised Sony. This success would have even convinced the Japanese firm to try its luck again in the world of portable consoleswith the hope of throwing a little shade at Nintendo. In the meantime, Sony said to itself that it was perhaps a good idea to offer a strong argument to this famous PS Portal.

PlayStation Portal isn't a portable console, but it's going to look a little more like one

One year: that's how long we had to wait for PlayStation Portal to gain a feature that will change everything and put this accessory in the spotlight! As Sony recently revealed, a new PlayStation Portal system software update has been rolled out (since November 20) and provides access to streaming in the cloud. For the moment, this feature is still in the beta stage and only covers 120 PS5 games from the PlayStation Plus catalog. However, this privilege is only intended for some players.

Indeed, if you have a PlayStation Portal and want to benefit from streaming in the cloud, you may need to upgrade your PlayStation Plus offer since this feature is only included in the Premium subscription. For the rest, Sony reminds that the maximum streaming quality cannot exceed 1080p and 60 frames per second and that the data storage limit is set at 100 GB, while emphasizing that synchronization is done automatically with your PS5. Note that you will probably need to activate the option in the menus. To do this, you must open the “Quick Menu”, access “Settings”, select “Cloud Streaming (beta)” and activate the option, disabled by default.
