Huawei details its pharaonic project to move away from Android. During its conference dedicated to developers, the Chinese giant once again presented HarmonyOS NEXT. This is an evolution of the HarmonyOS project which this time will not be based on AOSP (Android Open Source Project).
In plain language, this means that Huawei is ready to cut ties with Android for good. On HarmonyOS, it was still possible to install Android apps, the Next version will prohibit it. Enough to create its own ecosystem for the brand and thus protect itself from future thunderbolts like the American embargo that has hit it since May 2019.
Great adaptability on paper
That’s very nice, but how does Huawei plan to attract developers in the face of systems installed for more than a decade like iOS or Android? Already, the Chinese market and its gargantuan size should convince more than one.

Like any manufacturer in 2024, Huawei also wants to integrate AI into its OS. The name chosen to group the AI functionalities, Huawei Intelligence, is reminiscent of that of the iPhone, Apple Intelligence. The features seem to be heading in the same direction as the Chinese manufacturers: image generation, improved sound management, the ability for the voice assistant to describe the world, or even automatic translation.
HarmonyOS NEXT will be launched in the last quarter of 2024. Huawei has expressed a desire for global deployment. We should therefore in theory also benefit from it in Europe, even if the question still remains unanswered. HarmonyOS, the previous version, was never deployed on smartphones in Europe, remaining on Android and EMUI.
