A legacy still without continuation

Despite incessant calls from fans, Half-Life 3 remains a pipe dream. Since the release of Half-Life 2: Episode 2 in 2007, Valve has abandoned several projects related to the franchise, including a version of Half-Life 3 developed on the Source 2 engine between 2013 and 2014. This project, which would have mixed procedural generation and scripted sequences, was quickly canceled. Valve continues to focus on other productions, such as Counter-Strike 2 or VR experiences such as Half-Life: Alyx.

No release date has been announced for Half-Life 2 RTX, although one can hope it doesn't take years. Mysterious testing on Steam has fueled speculation, while Valve appears to be supporting this remaster project, even though the company is not directly involved. At the same time, Nvidia is celebrating this anniversary with a competition featuring a GeForce RTX 4080 Super graphics card, decorated with visuals inspired by the gaming universe.

While waiting for a Half-Life 3 that is far too hypothetical, this overhaul offers fans, especially older ones, a chance to rediscover Half-Life 2 in a modernized version, once again demonstrating the longevity and incredible impact of this masterpiece on the video game industry.
