GOG announces a super ambitious video game preservation program! | Xbox

In recent years, publishers and distributors of digital content have repeatedly reminded us to what extent video games purchased on stores like Steam or the Microsoft Store do not belong to us. We can for example cite the case of The Crew, whose players had their licenses withdrawn on Ubisoft Connect. However, GOG continues to stand out, this time by announcing an initiative to preserve video games.

GOG announces its game preservation program

While GOG already has a very good reputation, in particular because of its games offered without DRM, which means that they belong to the players, the distributor has just presented its preservation program.

The company thus ensures that the games supported in the program “will remain compatible with modern systems, even after their developers have stopped supporting them”.

Thus, on the store, currently 92 certified games with the small “Preserved by GOG” stamp can be purchased with your eyes closed, without ever worrying about compatibility problems. Note, however, that GOG has specified that 100 games have already joined the program, but we only see 92. The company has already confirmed that other games will soon join the program, including some that are not yet available in the catalog from the store.

While The Video Game History Foundation recently shared that 87% of games created before 2010 are inaccessible today, GOG now says it is determined “to bring this number to zero”.

“We have worked hard to achieve this and are confident that with this program we can combat the inaccessibility of video games and keep them alive forever.” »

GOG even offers the possibility of discovering in detail all the work carried out to preserve Heroes of Might and Magic III, Diablo and Resident Evil 1-2-3.

While GOG has already through its work made it possible to rediscover many old games, this promise to “keep them alive forever” clearly has something to cheer us up, while players are asking themselves many questions about preservation. of their digital libraries.
