The first developer beta of iOS 18 reveals a new feature. For the first time, iPhone will display the time, even when the battery is completely discharged.
The new features of iOS 18 continue to be revealed. A few days after the release of the first beta for developers, users realized that the smartphone could continue to tell the timeeven when the battery is completely discharged.
Time, even without battery
There are several posts on Reddit dedicated to this discovery. In a screenshot shared by a user, we see an iPhone 15 running out of battery. When the battery is completely out of power, you will still see time in left corner of the touch screen. In the center of the panel, we obviously find the inevitable red logo which indicates that the battery is empty.

Thanks to the iPhone’s power reserve
This new feature follows the arrival of the energy reserve (“Power Reserve”) of iPhones during the iOS 15 update. Inaugurated at the time of iPhone XS, the option maintains some of the smartphone’s functionalities a few hours after its shutdown.
It is thanks to this new feature that the iPhone can always be located through Apple’s Find network. Even if you have no battery left at all, you can find the track of your device using another Apple branded terminal. This energy reserve also allows the iPhone to work with NFC accessoriesas a public transport card, or to unlock a compatible connected lock.
Not surprisingly, the time only appears on the screen when you press the side button of the phone. Obviously, excessive use of this key risks prematurely draining your iPhone’s energy reserve.
For the record, iOS 18 is only available in beta version. The deployment of the public and final version of the update is not planned before fall 2024, alongside the announcement of the new iPhone 16. Among the flagship new features of the operating system, we find a center of finally customizable control, a new home screen, and finer settings for battery limitation.
