After an epic introduction, presentation of tvOS and visionOS 2, Apple presented the iOS 18 update during its keynote.
Apple promises “endless customization possibilities”. First of all, iPhone users will be able to personalize their home screens to the maximum. No more static screen, Apple offers freedom in application placement. Up, down, sideways. If you want to highlight your wallpaper, you will like this new feature.
Apple is also updating its dark mode by implementing a new design for apps. Once dark mode is enabled, apps will take on a dark appearance. And that’s not all, you can now completely change the appearance of your applications. Thanks to a new personalization window for the home screen, it will be possible to associate your applications with the colors of your wallpaper, or to choose any color. Blue, green, black if you want a minimalist appearance, anything is possible.
The control center is also evolving. Now, when you access the Control Center, new menus will appear. The Control Center also opens its customization to developers. This way, they will be able to implement controls for their applications. The control center also becomes customizable, allowing you to modify the size of icons for example.
The lock screen also has a new look, with customization of control icons. You will now be able to change the photo or flashlight icon.
Once again, Apple puts privacy at the center of its concerns. As a result, several new features will arrive with iOS 18. First of all, Apple is offering a new way to protect your data this year, by locking any application via a code or facial recognition. It will also be possible to hide applications and put them in a hidden and locked folder. In addition, when you agree to an application to access your contacts, iOS 18 will allow you to specifically choose which contacts.
New features are coming to the Messages application. The most important is Messages via a satellite. Using the same technology as SOS via Satellite, you will now be able to use Messages via Satellite if you are off-grid and want to contact your loved ones. A functionality also present for SMS.
Other customization features are also coming. As on WhatsApp, it will be possible to modify the format of the text, by underlining it for example. New text effects are coming, some sentences will have an automatic effect, but it will be possible to associate any effect with your sentences. Finally, iOS 18 changes reactions to messages. It will now be possible to react with any emoji.
Plans is getting a facelift, but only in the United States for now. Indeed, the application will now offer new topographical maps with hiking trails accessible offline.
