Apple presented its iPhone 16 just a few weeks ago, but now the iPhone 17 is already on everyone's list. The Apple brand is reportedly developing several technologies, which it would like to integrate into its smartphone in this new generation. This is particularly the case for the ProMotion functionality, with screens up to 120 Hz.
Until now this technology (called LPTO) was reserved for Pro models, but with the next generation, the 4 iPhones could be entitled to this option. According to information from the specialized media ET News, based in South Korea, Apple would be ready to take the plunge and launch LPTO technology on all of its smartphones.
What are the advantages of ProMotion?
With the arrival of ProMotion on the screens of the iPhone Pro and Pro Max a few years ago, Apple was able to work on many additional features. In other words, the Cupertino company was able to operate the screen when it was working at its highest (at 120 Hz) but also when the refresh rate was at its lowest (1 Hz). It is in particular under these conditions that the “always on display” functionality was created.
At Apple it comes in the form of “StandBy”. The screen then displays with a clock or scrolls through photos. It is always on, but it only refreshes once per second, which greatly limits its energy consumption. Several scientific studies have even demonstrated that a screen consumes less when turned on at 1Hz rather than alternating between on and off.
A consumption advantage
If the screen consumes less, this means that the battery is also less used. So the iPhones that have ProMotion technology are also the most durable at Apple. With the advent of this technology on the “standard” and “Plus” iPhones in the coming months, it will be interesting to see to what extent “ProMotion” extends the lifespan of iPhones.
For comparison, the iPhone 16 can now operate for 22 hours in “video playback”. Apple announces that the iPhone 16 Pro has 5 hours of additional battery life. For the 16 Pro Max (which has a larger battery) the difference would be 10 hours. A colossal gap, which could be reduced in the coming months with the generalization of ProMotion technology.
Bad news for iPhone Pros?
If users are delighted with the arrival of this feature on all iPhones. Apple might be less happy than expected. The Cupertino company could indeed do itself more harm than good with this generalization of “ProMotion”. This feature was one of the clear differentiating markers between the “standard” iPhone and the “Pro” and “Pro Max” models. Without it, sales of the iPhone Pro could decline, to the benefit of the “classic” iPhone.
