The Doom saga has left its mark on a whole generation of players, and although it has returned in several forms over the years, it is undoubtedly the original game that fans love the most. But what would this title look like if it swapped its FPS status for a completely different genre?

Thirty years later, this game remains iconic

Whether you played the original version released in 1993 or the remake released on eighth generation consoles in 2019, you probably know how Doom on your fingertips. One of the first FPS with 3D graphics and multiplayer options, Doom revolutionized a genre which now rhymes a lot with Call of Duty : Black Ops 6, Destiny 2or even Valuing. In Doomyou play as a Space Marine (aka Doomguy) who, after a dispute with a superior, finds himself forced to work in a military complex processing radioactive waste on the planet Mars.

But the military does not limit itself to waste treatment, and it is by carrying out experiments on teleportation that a portal to Hell has accidentally been opened, letting a horde of evil demons invade Phobosone of the moons of the planet Mars. The Doomguy will then be sent to this moon to rescue the survivors and kill the demons with a gun. As the game progresses, you'll be able to pick up new weapons, like a minigun, a shotgun, and even a rocket launcher to light up your enemies. But for this Doom fan, nothing is more effective than a good old bare-knuckle beating…

Doomguy is afraid of nothing

Big fan of Doom, Edy Pagaza decided to turn his back on BFG 9000 for the benefit of Doomguy's fists in a mod that transforms the iconic game of id Software into a third-person action game. In his mod, of which you can find an overview below, Edy Pagaza offers smoother camera and movementas well as a new character model become an expert in close combat, with series of punches, combos, and even well-placed kicks to destroy the demons that cross his path.

8 years ago an idea came to me and I created this prototype using pre-rendered characters. Since then, I've learned 3D modeling and animation, and found a way to import 3D models into Doom.

Pagaza has been working on this project since 2016and the evolution between the first iteration of the mod and the most recent version is simply breathtaking. The animations are fluid and the diversity of combos is impressive. The sound and visual effects, as fun as they are, give a bit of nostalgia to this mod which has come a long way since its debut. Moreover, Pagaza is currently working on enemy behavior to allow them to block and avoid attacks, but also to be more aggressive towards the player. Other useful improvements are coming too, like a dodge feature for the Doomguy.
