Telephony: Apple deploys its generative AI on its devices

Apple deployed its first generative artificial intelligence (AI) system, called “Apple Intelligence”, on Monday on its smartphones, computers and tablets, marking the Californian giant’s official entry into Silicon Valley’s star technology.

The iPhone maker gave a highly anticipated first preview of Apple Intelligence in June, joining its neighbors and competitors in the race for generative AI tools launched by OpenAI with ChatGPT at the end of 2022.

Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta and Apple see this technology as the next chapter of computing.

All-new tools and experiences

Companies are investing tens of billions of dollars in research and design of AI assistants capable of interacting with human users, answering their questions in writing or speaking, and producing all kinds of content on request and tailor-made.

“Apple Intelligence ushers in a new era for iPhone, iPad and Mac, and delivers all-new tools and experiences that will transform what our users can accomplish,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a press release published Monday.

Apple’s new features include tools to summarize notifications and messages, to help with writing or to find photos more easily, by simple description.

The Siri voice assistant, which until now had evolved little, is becoming more conversational and more efficient.

The iPhone maker also plans to integrate ChatGPT features into its services by December.

Other tools must be added by the end of the year, such as that for creating images, a function already present in the assistants of the firm’s competitors.

«Private Cloud Compute»

The company has ensured that it prioritizes user privacy by keeping data processing local, directly on the device, or by using a new system called “Private Cloud Compute”, which allows it to go through the company’s servers. Apple without storing the data there.

Apple Intelligence is currently only available in English. Chinese, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Korean and other languages ​​are expected to arrive next year.

In the European Union, the group had postponed the launch of Apple Intelligence indefinitely, due to “regulatory uncertainties” linked to new laws on digital markets.

It now specifies that the new system will be available on Mac computers in English (under the most recent version of the operating system), and will begin to be deployed on iPhones and iPads from April.

Apple also unveiled a new desktop computer (iMac) on Monday, which integrates the in-house designed M4 chip and Apple Intelligence.
