Google will begin testing search and shopping ads in its AI-generated responses in the United States, the Alphabet-owned company said Tuesday, days after widely rolling out the AI Overviews feature at its annual conference I/O.

Ads will appear in a “sponsored” section within the AI preview based on the relevance of the query and information, the company said in a blog post.

Google is looking to expand its dominance beyond traditional search engine advertising, thanks to the emerging technology of generative AI.

The integration of AI into its search engine should allow it to increase its advertising sales, an important Source of revenue for the technology giant.

Google reported a 13% increase in advertising sales to $61.7 billion in the first quarter ended March 31.

The company said it will continue to test and learn new ad formats, gathering feedback from advertisers.

Last week at its I/O conference, Alphabet showed how it leverages AI across everything it does, including boosting the Gemini chatbot and improving its popular search engine. (Reporting by Jaspreet Singh in Bengaluru; Editing by Tasim Zahid)
