This remake of a staple of the series Paper Mario will be released on Switch on May 23. The opportunity to review several characteristics of this game long awaited by fans of the famous Italian-Japanese plumber.

3 The best of the series

This saga, which immerses us in Mario’s paper adventures, began in 2000. Initially planned as a sequel to Mario RPGthe version Paper of the Japanese hero quickly stood on his own two feet. After seven games set in this very particular world, Nintendo was spoiled for choice when it came to making a remake. It is nevertheless no coincidence that the publisher decided to turn to The Millennium Gate.

Initially released in 2004 on GameCube, this second game is widely considered the best in the franchise. Paper Mario. It was even voted RPG of the year at the prestigious DICE Awards, which is a feat in itself when we remember some of its contemporaries (Tales of Symphonia, Everquest IIor the successful extension of Neverwinter Nightsto recite nobody else but them).

2 An original style

When the first Paper Mario first appeared on Nintendo 64, the story seemed classic. It must be said that the aspect of this RPG developed by Intelligent Systems and published by Nintendo is not the most original, and it is far from being the first time that Bowser has come to break the peace of the Mushroom Kingdom to kidnap the princess Peach, eternal damsel in distress from the world of the mustachioed plumber.

However, the real originality of this video game work is its visual bias and its paper aesthetic. It’s a real pleasure to once again see Mario, Koop, Todd and the others represented in cut-out versions. Far from constituting a simple visual coquetry, this stylistic choice is once again closely linked to the gameplay of The thousand-year-old doorand walking through each of these diverse and varied environments is very enjoyable.

1 Eclectic gameplay

The game’s stunning level design is inseparable from the variety of its engine. For example, when players find themselves on a train, they must solve a series of puzzles that would make Hercule Poirot’s mustache curl, who, in his time, had to investigate the Orient Express. Those familiar with the original opus will be pleasantly surprised to realize to what extent the combat system has been completely renewed for the occasion. Much more strategic and interactive than before, the battles of The thousand-year-old door are the best of the whole series Paper Mario.
