The Cégep de St-Félicien presents the 41st edition of the Science Reflection Day (JRS), which will be held this year on Tuesday, October 29, 2024 at the Hôtel Château Roberval.

“Organized by around thirty Natural Sciences students, with the support of four teachers, this day promises to be a source of inspiration and discovery. For several months, these students have been working ardently to offer an enriching and stimulating event,” we can read in a press release issued by the college.

Encourage reflection

The Science Reflection Day aims to encourage in-depth reflection on the various scientific professions, to introduce people to sometimes little-known professions and the atypical paths that lead to them.

“The event also aims to concretely demonstrate the opportunities in science, particularly for students considering a career in natural sciences at the college level. Furthermore, this activity aims to deconstruct certain stereotypes and popularize science to the general public. »

Speakers

On the program, four speakers from various scientific disciplines will share their profession and their academic background, thus offering a rich and varied perspective on the world of science.

From 9:30 a.m. to 10:40 a.m. participants will be able to hear Maude Bouchard, Ph. D. Director of Research and Development, HALEO

“Maude Bouchard has developed expertise in the field of sleep for more than 15 years, highlighting the importance of sleep for health and performance. His work aims to make a positive contribution to society. She shares her knowledge through lectures and interviews to raise public awareness of this essential subject. »

From 11 a.m. to 12:10 p.m., it will be the turn of Claudie Beaulieu, Ph. D., to speak.

She is a Professor in the Department of Ocean Sciences at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

“Claudie Beaulieu, graduate in Sciences, letters and arts from Cégep de St-Félicien, will present her career and her research in climate data science, as well as her efforts to make this information more accessible. »

From 1:30 p.m. to 2:40 p.m., conference by Michèle Desjardins, Ph. D.

“Professor in the Department of Physics, Physical and Optical Engineering at University and researcher at the CHU de Québec-UL Research Center, she is passionate about several disciplines. Michèle Desjardins explored various fields before choosing to study the brain using physics. Her journey took her to , California and finally to Quebec, where she uses advanced techniques like magnetic resonance and microscopy to study brain activity. She shares her unique path, influenced by coincidences and her mother, while discussing her work in neuroscience. »

From 3 p.m. to 4:10 p.m., participants will be able to hear Daniel Poisson, Ph. D.

Researcher in Mashteuiatsh at Écofaune boréale Daniel Poisson has an interest in materials science that begins in childhood with the exploration of the materials that surround us. Chemistry reveals the mechanisms of atoms and molecules, a source of wonder for scientists. Daniel Poisson shares his journey to show that everyone can have a scientific mind, even without being aware of it.

Conference by Luc Langevin

Finally, to close the event, the Cégep will welcome, at 7 p.m., Luc Langevin, illusionist and physicist.

“During his conference, he will share his fascinating journey, explaining how he left his scientific studies to realize his childhood dream: to become a professional illusionist. Mr. Langevin will take us through key moments of his unique journey and demonstrate how the science and creativity can complement each other harmoniously. For this special occasion, he will offer a magic act. »

For this conference, tickets are available at a cost of $15 per person on the Lepointdevente.com website. You can buy them by following this link: Cégep de St-Félicien presents LUC LANGEVIN – Day of reflection on science – October 29, 2024 – Multiple locations – Lepointdevente.com.
