BMW M4 CS (2024): yet another new formula

We no longer present the BMW M, these ultra-sporty models which have existed since the end of the 70s (BMW M1 in 1978) and the end of the 80s for the more classic variants of the range (BMW M3 from 1986). From the 2 Series to the large 8 Series, including the 3, 4 and 5 and the X3 and X5 SUVs, all BMWs in the “regular” range are entitled to their Motorsport version. This is a long tradition, which generally combines rear-wheel drive with a very powerful engine and a significantly reworked chassis.

The M4 CS uses the mechanical elements of the M3 CS.

Before its restyling, the M4 coupe was available in a rear-wheel drive version (510 horsepower), xDrive with all-wheel drive (also 510 horsepower) and CSL opting for simple propulsion and a six-cylinder pushed to 550 horsepower with a more radical definition and production in limited series. Since the restyling carried out at the start of the year, this M4 coupe, like the M3, requires all-wheel drive, with power increased to 530 horsepower and a price of at least €121,000.

The interior is obviously sporty.

And here is this restyled M4 again, this time in a new “CS” variant, whose technical sheet seems very close to that of the M3 CS sedan unveiled at the beginning of 2023. It has, like the previous M4 CSL and M3 CS , a 550-horsepower turbocharged six-cylinder. With standard all-wheel drive, this configuration allows it to go from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds instead of 3.5 for the normal M4 xDrive (but also to reach 302 km/h in top speed). point).

No more BMW Ms capable of transforming into smoke machines? Obviously not since the all-wheel drive of the M4 CS, already strongly favoring the rear axle in its sporty modes, remains entirely disconnectable to make the M4 CS a simple two-wheel drive on request.

There remains the problem of the price, set at €162,000 here in France for this M4 CS equipped with its numerous options helping to achieve maximum dynamic efficiency. The price of cars has been increasing precipitously for four years and this inflation has absolutely not spared the niche of German ultra-sports cars.

When we tried the first M4 of this generation in Competition version in 2021, it cost €104,550. When we got behind the wheel of the old M4 in 2015, it “only” cost €82,300. It has obviously progressed a lot since that time in terms of power, efficiency and comfort. But it now belongs to the genre of unaffordable exceptional cars, made all the more out of reach by the French ecological penalty of €60,000.

It’s difficult to continue dreaming of one day being able to afford this kind of machine in such conditions, unfortunately…
