Recently, rumors spread about the development of a new 3D Donkey Kong game for the Nintendo Switch. Informed tipster Liam Robertson confirmed these speculations, but with some sad news: the game was canceled some time ago.

This ambitious project was initiated during the Wii U era, shortly after the integration of Nintendo characters, including Donkey Kong, into Skylanders SuperChargers.

Vicarious Visions was at the helm of this project in 2016, under the special supervision of Shigeru Miyamoto.

However, development only lasted six months. Activision decided to redirect all resources from Vicarious Visions to the Call of Duty series and Diablo 2 Remastered, which was the last straw for Vicarious Visions founders Karthik and Guha Bala. They then left the company to found Velan Studios, which has since collaborated with Nintendo on Mario Kart Live: Home Tour.

Interestingly, Activision also reportedly canceled Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater for the same reason, showing the challenges facing even the most established video game development studios.
