Google launches “audio” emojis for calls

Google wants to allow users to express their emotions and moods with emojis during phone conversations.

A strange novelty to enrich your telephone conversations. As some Pixel smartphone owners have noticed, Google has added “audio” emojis to its Phone app. The principle is the same as for emojis used in SMS to react to a person’s words.

As the site 9to5Google indicates, there are six of these “audio” emojis: applause, laughter, party, crying, poop and drum. “Express your emotions and moods (…) with emojis to touch during a call,” explains Google about this feature.

A function considered not very useful

Concretely, when a user presses one of these emojis during a telephone conversation, the application displays a fun animation accompanied by a sound effect.

At the moment, only a few Google Pixel owners have been able to use this feature, which is still in beta development. While it was well received by some, others were less enthusiastic. “Has anyone asked for this? No. Am I still going to use it? Yes,” said a user on Reddit, reports the Sky site.

“If you ask me, they should focus on things to improve,” wrote another on X (formerly Twitter).

As the functionality is under development, it is not yet certain whether Google will ultimately deploy it across the entire Android ecosystem.
