A historical update
Decidedly more verbose on weekends, Mark Gurman takes the opportunity to return to the possible partnership between Cupertino and OpenAi. A few weeks ago, there was talk of simple talks, but the two firms could well be further along in the negotiations.
The journalist indeed affirms that the latter would be at an advanced stage and would relate more particularly to using OpenAI technologies to power a chatbot integrated into iOS 18. On the other hand, we don’t really know if it is intended to complement or replace Siri!
Finally, nothing would be decided yet because Apple would still be in discussions with Google about granting licenses to exploit Gemini.
Functions directly on the iPhone
The first round of AI features may not pass by Apple servers but by the iPhone (would this mean that they are reserved for the iPhone 16, or even the iPhone 16 Pro, putting all other generations behind? We don’t hope so!).
Indeed, Mark Gurman (still him) estimated that these would be hosted entirely on the device. This means that there is no cloud processing component in the company’s language model
.
Apple will likely offer some cloud-based AI capabilities that could use Google’s Gemini or another. Apple has indeed had discussions with companies such as Google, OpenAI and Baidu in China about potential generative AI partnerships.
Siri boosted with AI (but not only that)
For several weeks, Mark Gurman has been confident and expects that iOS 18 will be the biggest update of the iPhone
. The system could have AI technology, which should improve how Siri and the Messages app can answer questions and auto-fill sentences
. This new version of Siri could be based on large language model technology, similar to ChatGPT (OpenAI) or Gemini (Google). Thus, the assistant could animate still images using AI!
One downside, however: Apple is unlikely to launch its own AI chatbot with iOS 18. But the journalist confirms that the firm has had discussions with companies such as Google, OpenAI and Baidu about potential generative AI partnerships.
