How the ESC becomes a mega success for Switzerland

Hosting the Eurovision Song Contest is nothing new for Switzerland. After all, the international music competition was already held in Lugano in 1956 and in Lausanne in 1989.

And yet today – 36 years after the last edition and just a few months before the next one – the Swiss Confederation is facing “unique challenges”, as Isabella Blengini, Associate Professor at the EHL Hospitality Business School, says in an interview with 20 Minuten.

Unlike in previous years, the influx of tourists in 2025 will be massively higher, which will put particular pressure on the catering and hotel industries. However, since this will only be a short-term rush, Blengini advises Switzerland not to make any long-term investments such as building new hotels.

“Instead, the focus must be on optimising existing resources.” This includes temporary measures such as increasing staff and basic services, improving service quality and using temporary accommodation.

Blengini also stresses that holding such a large event is less about competition and more about cooperation. Only through cooperation can companies create a unified and inviting image – and thus improve Switzerland’s international image in the long term.

But the involvement of local communities is also crucial, says Blengini: “Residents should be able to actively participate in the organization and logistical aspects in order to create authentic and unforgettable experiences for tourists.” This includes, for example, cultural performances, food festivals and interactive experiences.

All of this makes it clear that events such as the Eurovision Song Contest have a significant impact on a country’s international reputation and economy. However, Blengini is certain that Switzerland is prepared to overcome this hurdle and will successfully host the international music competition.
