Monk : What is this new fiction with Tony Shalhoub about?

This world is a jungle” for Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub), who suffers from all the phobias and obsessive compulsive disorders listed in psychology textbooks. Suffice to say that the Covid pandemic is his worst nightmare… Abandoned by his publisher, the former inspector, who has been trying to write his memoirs for ten years (!), must repay his advance. Now he is unable to pay for the wedding of Molly (Caitlin McGee), the daughter of his former partner Natalie (Traylor Howard). Monk is in a bad way… But nothing beats a good old crime to get back on track! And a confrontation with a devious suspect, who offers Monk a duel worthy of Columbo!

Monk : What is the value of the return of Monk (Tony Shalhoub) in an unpublished fiction?

What a joy to see this cult investigator again! Just a few minutes into the episode, we’re already laughing at Monk’s antics, who is more anxious than ever. That doesn’t stop us from also having tears in our eyes during a few sequences where the former police officer is in complete disarray. That’s what makes this series so brilliant, which manages to make us laugh with a character who is ultimately suffering in a world that attacks him from all sides but who survives thanks to the kindness of the world around him. There is another enjoyable aspect of this character, his liberating effect. Through his assumed grumpy and exasperating side, there is something quite liberating for the viewer who lets him express his own frustrations on screen. And what if, somewhere, Monk was good for morale? In any case, we come out all touched and cheerful after having followed this unique investigation which reminds us oh how much and why we loved this character so much!
