Heavy thunderstorms swept across parts of the canton of Zurich late Sunday evening. Around 230 emergency calls were received within four hours, a spokesman for the cantonal operations center said when asked by the Keystone-SDA news agency.

The district of Affoltern was particularly affected, as a spokesman for Protection and Rescue Zurich said early on Monday morning. No significant damage was initially known.

According to the information, there were also a particularly high number of operations on Lake Zurich in Wädenswil, Richterswil and in the Zurich Oberland. Due to the large number of emergency calls, especially between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m., more employees were called in. Experience has shown that most operations during such thunderstorms involve flooded cellars or securing property and branches, said the spokesman.

In Wädenswil, 43 millimeters of rain fell within 20 minutes, as the weather service of the Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology (Meteoschweiz) announced on Platform X early Monday morning. In Schmerikon SG, gusts of wind with a speed of 87 kilometers per hour were measured. In Küsnacht ZH, Meteoschweiz registered 122 close-range lightning strikes.
