Ex-Hurricane Kirk brings squalls and heavy rain

Europe is preparing for (ex)Hurricane Kirk. Spain and will be particularly affected on Wednesday, and the storm will reach Switzerland on Thursday.

On Wednesday, ex-hurricane “Kirk” will make landfall via the Spanish region of Galicia via the Bay of Biscay towards western France, as a graphic from MeteoSwiss shows.

“Kirk” carries a lot of moisture with it and will cause heavy rainfall. Strong winds must also be expected.

On its way across the Atlantic, “Kirk” transformed into an extratropical low-pressure area and thus became an ex-hurricane.

“Kirk” will also have an impact on the weather in Switzerland. Strong foehn gusts can be expected in the Alpine valleys on Wednesday, and “Kirk” will also bring a lot of rain on the southern side of the Alps.

It will be stormy in large parts of Switzerland on Thursday night when “Kirk” passes just north-west of Switzerland. Winds of 70 to 90 kilometers per hour are likely to occur in the lowlands.

On the Jura heights and in the Alps, gusts of up to 120 kilometers per hour are possible. It remains wet on the southern side of the Alps.

The rest of the week is still uncertain. Showers will probably continue, but the sun may occasionally peek out.
