Northern lights were spotted near the Swiss border on Monday night. They were photographed by an Austrian webcam with a view over the Rhine Valley, as the weather service Meteonews announced on the online platform X.

The natural spectacle was seen from Vorderälpele in Austria, as shown in a recording published by Meteonews. The Hohe Kasten is photographed in the background. There were often too many clouds hanging over Switzerland to see the phenomenon, wrote Meteonews.

Due to a strong solar storm, northern lights were expected on Saturday night and Sunday. They arise because the sun throws large amounts of plasma into space. The US weather agency NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) expected storms in the G3 category on Friday. The northern lights visible in large parts of Switzerland in May were triggered by a G5 storm, the highest category.
