Around 30 members of the Swiss army have contracted norovirus. To prevent the disease from spreading further, the sick people were isolated from the rest of the troops and are receiving medical care.

Those affected suffer from gastrointestinal complaints, as the army announced on Friday. Army members of the medical school 42 in Airolo TI and the artillery department 1 in Bière VD were ill. The two surges of infection occurred independently of each other, an army spokesman told the Keystone-SDA news agency when asked.

Easily transmittable virus

According to the announcement, symptoms of norovirus illness are primarily vomiting, fever and diarrhea. Normally, the disease lasts up to 72 hours and heals without any consequential damage in healthy young people.

The virus is transmitted relatively easily from person to person. Outbreaks occur again and again in community facilities such as barracks or homes.
