A Gudjohnsen who wants to annoy Chelsea

A special game awaits the amazing Gudjohnsen striker family this evening in the Conference League – which apparently had to happen.

Eidur Gudjohnsen, the most famous footballer Iceland has ever produced, came on as a substitute for his father in his first international match. Andri Gudjohnsen, Eidur’s son, didn’t manage that, but of course football also made it easy for him to write one of those stories that only he writes.

And that’s why Andri is playing tonight (9 p.m., LIVE! on kicker) at Stamford Bridge, where his father once scored a lot of goals and celebrated the championship title in 2005 with José Mourinho, Arjen Robben and Didier Drogba, exactly where Chelsea Had to wait 50 years. Andri Gudjohnsen, then three and now 22 years old, is Chelsea’s first guest in the Conference League with KAA Gent.

Andri initially wanted to become a goalkeeper, but his genes were stronger

When the draw for the league phase was over, the attacker, like many Heidenheim professionals, made a few calls. The first, of course, went to Father Eidur. “It’s typical to be drawn to Chelsea, isn’t it? It’s so special for me and for him,” said Andri BBC. “I was born when my father played here.”

He has now scored 26 international matches and scored six goals, far more than his father with 22. He once wanted to be a goalkeeper, although grandpa Arnor also stormed for Anderlecht, as did dad Eidur for Chelsea and Barcelona. The genes were apparently stronger. “Yeah, it’s probably something that’s been passed down through the generations,” he suspects.

Andri ends up in Gent via a detour – and Gent in the Conference League

Andri, whose brothers Sveinn (26, Sarpsorg 08 FF/Norway) and Daniel (18, Malmö FF/Sweden) are also professional strikers and were also born in London, once played in the youth ranks of Chelsea and Barca thanks to his father, but caught up only really gained traction in Sweden and Denmark. This summer, Lyngby BK (Denmark) signed him after a successful loan season, initially from IFK Norrköping (Sweden), but then sold him directly to Gent for almost three million euros.

The Belgian first division team had worked hard to qualify for participation in the Conference League nationally and internationally over several qualifying rounds, which came to Chelsea almost by chance after a turbulent season. Apparently this duel just had to happen somehow, and it definitely has something to do with the eternal Gudjohnsens.

“We’re going there with the attitude that we want to take something with us,” Andri announced after Gent’s good start to the season before the highlight against Chelsea and will rely on the opponent to reveal deficits in exactly this area, in terms of attitude. In any case, Conference League football does not fit with the self-image of the Blues that Eidur Gudjohnsen once helped to build.
