Liverpool FC take the lead in the Premier League

As of: September 28, 2024 8:42 p.m

Liverpool FC has taken over the lead in the Premier League after Manchester City’s mistake. Cole Palmer had previously caused Fabian Hürzeler’s first defeat as coach of Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday (September 28th, 2024).

Hürzeler, who was FC St. Pauli’s promotion coach last season, is one of the surprises of the season with his new team. He got nine points (two wins, three draws) from the first five games – but Brighton had the same class as Palmer no means. Although the visitors had taken the lead through Georginio Rutter (7th), the England international only needed ten minutes to turn the game around on his own.

In the 21st minute Palmer equalized, in the 28th he gave Chelsea the lead with a penalty – he has converted ten out of ten penalties in the Premier League – and in the 31st he even increased the score to 3-1. Although Brighton came close again through Carlos Baleba (34th), Palmer’s fourth strike ensured the crowning conclusion to a gala half with him as a superstar. In the second half, Chelsea maintained a 4-2 lead and moved up to fourth place for the time being.

Arsenal now level with Man City

For a long time it looked as if Chelsea would even be able to jump to third place – but then Leandro Trossard led Arsenal to a 4-2 (2-0) win in the fourth minute of added time Leicester City After him, Kai Havertz also scored to make the final score (90+9). Coach Mikel Arteta’s team had previously squandered a 2-0 lead thanks to Gabriel Martinelle (20th) and Trossard (45th + 1), and after James Justin’s brace (47th / 63rd) it lasted deep into the game Additional time until the “Gunners“were able to fight back.

And so only the slightly worse goal difference separates the runner-up from defending champions Manchester City. The previous week the two teams had drawn 2-2, this time Arsenal took advantage of City’s loss of points Newcastle United Didn’t get beyond 1:1 (0:0). Josko Gvardiol had given coach Pep Guardiola’s team the lead (35′), Anthony Gordon’s penalty ensured the final score (58′).

Klopp’s successor Slot at the top

The slip-up in Newcastle cost Manchester City their lead in the table. Liverpool held their own in the evening game against Wolverhampton Wanderers and enabled coach Arne Slot, Jürgen Klopp’s successor, to have an exceptionally good start to the season. After the 2-1 (1-0) win, the “Reds” lead the Premier League after six match days, with the goals scored by Ibrahima Konaté (45th + 2) and Mohamed Salah (61st / penalty).

Theoretically, Aston Villa still has the opportunity to jump to first place at Ipswich Town on Sunday, but to do so they would need a win by seven goals.
