In the Saale-Orla district, the first cases of bluetongue disease have been detected in several cattle and one sheep farm. One cow has already died as a result of the disease, and the other animals are being treated, the district administration in the Saale-Orla district announced.

This means that the virus is continuing to spread in Thuringia. Confirmed cases have already been reported in the Nordhausen district, the Eichsfeld district, the Gotha district and the Wartburg district.

Bluetongue disease, especially serotype 3, has been spreading in the Netherlands, Belgium and also in Germany since October 2023, coming from the northwest towards Thuringia. The disease is harmless to humans. In ruminants such as sheep or cattle, it leads to fever and loss of appetite. The disease is transmitted via mosquitoes.
