A year ago, a mudslide swept away part of the village of Schwanden – rts.ch

The landslides that occurred a year ago in Schwanden (GL) are one of the most expensive local natural disasters in Switzerland. The bill runs into tens of millions of francs, of which the municipality of Glarus-Süd has to cover 18 million.

The amount of damage does not include the new road that will have to be rebuilt to access the Niederen valley, a representative of the municipality said on Tuesday on the sidelines of a press conference marking the first anniversary of the disaster.

Work is scheduled to begin by summer 2026.

Only 10% of donations go to victims

In one year, the municipality received private donations totalling 1.2 million francs. Only 10% of this amount has been paid out to the residents affected by the landslides so far. Aid is provided on request and on a subsidiary basis, when insurance companies refuse to cover costs or only cover a modest part of them.

A total of 46 people lost their homes in the disaster. About twenty others still have to wait patiently before they can return to their still damaged homes. The ongoing construction of a protective dike must be completed before they can return.

Works until 2026

Around 60,000 m3 of land still threaten to collapse on this residential area. The work to protect against landslides and rockfalls is still expected to continue until the end of 2025.

The main landslide occurred on 29 August 2023 in the late afternoon, over a length of 400 metres, followed by a second one two and a half hours later. In total, 30,000 m3 of mud destroyed many houses.

The affected area had been evacuated the day before. The road overlooking the area had been destroyed four months earlier, putting the town on alert. Further less serious landslides occurred in the months following the disaster.
