A doctor from Berlin’s Charité hospital has disappeared off the face of the earth for a month. He had planned to go hiking in Italy, but has not resurfaced.

Frankfurt – The doctor Marcus Maurer was on holiday in San Bartolomeo, Italy, at the end of July 2024. He wanted to spend a nice time in the holiday resort with his wife, brother and daughter, but now there is no trace of him.

German doctor does not return from hike – Charité professor missing in Italy

As some Italian media reported, the 58-year-old doctor set out on a hike on Monte Giove on July 31, 2024. His last cell phone signal was received on Wednesday afternoon at 1:40 p.m., and since then there has been no trace of him. The mountain Monte Giove is located just before the Swiss border on Lake Maggiore, and his cell phone is said to have connected to the Swiss telephone network Swisscom.

When the doctor did not reappear after his hike, the mountain rescue team set out to find him. They were also supported by the doctor’s fellow travelers, who searched some rather unknown paths. At first, the helpers still had high hopes of finding the man alive. At the time of the disappearance, the temperatures were rather mild, and the doctor was able to help himself due to his profession. A month later, the chances of finding him are rather slim. A 20-year-old from Bavaria also disappeared in Italy – she had drowned.

Photos of the doctor were also shared on social media to call on the public to help in the search. The family even put out an appeal on Facebook for a reward of 3,000 euros if the doctor could be found through information.

Many of his colleagues also posted on Facebook about the doctor’s disappearance and expressed their sadness. “The search for him was called off a few days ago. The rescue teams and his family assume that a fatal accident must have occurred. We simply cannot understand this and still hope that Marcus will come back alive,” wrote a doctor from Greece. (rd)
