Last year’s women’s winner Coco Gauff (WTA 3) is also eliminated from the US Tennis Open in Flushing Meadows.

The American Coco Gauff lost 3:6, 6:4, 3:6 to her compatriot Emma Navarro in the round of 16. “I gave it everything I had”, said Coco Gauff, “mentally and emotionally, I couldn’t do any more this time.” Coco Gauff entered a Grand Slam tournament as the title holder for the first time. She was unable to live up to the fans’ high expectations on her return to Flushing Meadows. She made 19 double faults against Navarro.

After good results at the Australian Open and the French Open (both semi-finals), Coco Gauff has been disappointing all summer. She failed early on at Wimbledon, the Olympic Games and the preparatory tournament in Cincinnati. “It certainly wasn’t the summer I dreamed of.”

After Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic, Gauff seamlessly joined the list of favorites who had already pulled out during the first week of the tournament.

Alexander Zverev also feared the worst on Sunday. He hurt his right foot with a “funny step”. During his 3:6, 6:1, 6:2, 6:2 victory over Brendan Nakashima, the German limped in the fourth set. “But everything is fine, nothing to worry about,” said Zverev. Two years ago, Zverev had seriously injured his ankle at Roland-Garros; the operation put him out of action for months. Alexander Zverev will meet the American Taylor Fritz, against whom he lost in the quarter-finals at Wimbledon, in the quarter-finals.
