The Greek islands are experiencing a deadly summer. Now a missing German woman has been discovered dead in the sea.

Crete – In Greece, vacationers are repeatedly tragically dying. In a depressing series of deaths in the country, at least eight tourists have already died. For example, they underestimate the heat, which is hitting the country particularly hard this year. Residents sometimes even have to save water. Others suffer terrible swimming accidents.

Dead German recovered on Crete: Divers found her body

Now another piece of sad news has been added to this list. A German woman has been missing since Friday, August 30, 2024. She was traveling on the holiday island of Crete. She has since been found dead in the sea, as was announced on August 31. A diver discovered the lifeless body of the 65-year-old between the seaside resorts of Prassonissi and Triopetra, the coast guard announced. Her body was transported by boat to the port of Agia Galini.

The now deceased woman’s worried husband had informed the Greek authorities beforehand when he had not had any contact with his wife since Friday afternoon. Both the police and the coast guard immediately launched a search operation. The husband told the police that he did not know his wife’s whereabouts, but suspected that she might have gone swimming. An autopsy should now clarify the exact cause of death.

At least eight tourists dead in Greece – heat wave sweeps across the country

Previously, on June 9, the body of the well-known British television presenter Michael Mosley was found on the island of Symi. A few days later, an 80-year-old Belgian was found dead near the ancient city of Lato in eastern Crete. Among the deceased were tourists from the Netherlands and the USA. Two French women aged 73 and 64 are also still missing since a hike on the island of Sikinos in June. A 67-year-old German tourist also died while hiking on Crete in June. The authorities assumed that he lost his bearings and took a wrong turn.

Due to the extreme temperatures, Greek health authorities have repeatedly issued warnings, advising tourists not to stay outdoors during the hottest hours of the day. Popular tourist destinations such as ancient sites in Athens responded to the heat by closing at certain times.

These are not the only cases of death and missing persons that holiday islands are currently experiencing. Several people have also recently disappeared on Tenerife. The Briton Jay Slater could only be recovered dead. (jh/AFP)
