After a hot day with September records, very strong thunderstorms with hail, squalls, heavy rain and many lightning strikes developed in some areas over the northern side of the Alps.
Lightning
By 9:15 p.m., over 50,000 lightning strikes had been recorded across Switzerland. That would be an extraordinary number even for a midsummer day.
Gale gusts
A gust of 96 km/h was recorded in Koppigen/BE, more than 85 km/h were recorded in Schmerikon/SG, Cham/ZG and Quinten/SG.
Lots of rain
For example, a lot of rain in a short space of time was measured in Zwillikon/ZH, Wädenswil/ZH and Cham/ZG with over 55 mm in one hour, which is around 1/3 of a month’s total. In Oron/VD, Koppigen/BE and Engelberg/OW over 30 mm was recorded in less than an hour. A look at the radar shows that significantly more rain fell locally.
Hagel
There was also hailing in many places, for example in Henggart/SH or in Schlosswil/BE.
