The 100-year-old former US President Jimmy Carter voted by postal vote in the presidential election – it was very important to him to do this again before his death.

The ballot was dropped into a mailbox in the courthouse in the city of Americus, several US media reported, citing the Carter Center. Carter had made it clear in the past that he wanted to vote for Democrat Kamala Harris. In the hotly contested US state of Georgia, Carter’s homeland, early voting for the election began on Tuesday. According to the authorities, never before have so many people voted on the first day as this time.

Carter’s health is poor – he turned 100 just over two weeks ago. Around a year and a half ago, after several hospital stays, he stopped his medical treatment and sought home care. “I’m just trying to get it done to get Kamala Harris elected,” Carter is said to have told his son Chip a few weeks ago, with a view to his birthday and the election. Carter’s grandson Jason told the regional newspaper Atlanta Journal Constitution.

The presidential election in the USA will take place on November 5th. According to polls, there is likely to be a neck-and-neck race between Democrat Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trump. Early voting has already begun in several states. Voters are looking with excitement to the particularly contested so-called swing states in which the election is likely to be decided. (sda/dpa)
