Office for Food Safety and Animal Health • The Swiss Rabies Center has detected the rabies virus in a water bat found in the canton of Glarus.

The Daubent bat was found in Mühlehorn (municipality of Glarus ) on September 20, 2024. Switzerland is considered free of rabies for both domestic and wild animals. However, individual cases in bats can still occur rarely. Since 1992, only seven cases have been diagnosed in Switzerland.

What to do?

If you find them, it is important not to touch wild animals that are sick or have behavioral problems and to inform the Bat Protection Foundation or the Wildhut. If you are bitten by a bat, you should consult a doctor immediately to take the necessary precautionary measures. There is no reason for the population to be alarmed. The Swiss Rabies Center offers more information.

The enforcement of veterinary, food and chemical laws in the canton of Glarus is carried out by the Graubünden Office for Food Safety and Animal Health.
