You can finally stream the long-awaited sequel to “The Shaft” on Netflix. This has one or two surprises in store, which of course we don’t want to spoil. We would still like to give you a hint…

When “The Shaft” launched exclusively on Netflix on March 20, 2020, hardly anyone would have expected that the thriller would generate such gigantic hype. But the “gore ethics lesson”, as the film by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia is referred to in the official FILMSTARTS review, among others, struck a chord with the audience, became a worldwide phenomenon and is still ranked 5th among the most popular or most watched films to this day -English language Netflix films of all time.

We had to wait a full four and a half years until the sequel finally saw the light of day in the streaming world. You have been able to watch “Der Schacht 2” (exclusively on Netflix again, of course) since October 4th. But Maybe there’s something else you should know before you throw yourself headlong into the dystopian culinary war? We think: Yes, there is one thing (at least)…

Just don’t turn off the film too early!

Of course, “The Shaft 2” is all about the construct of the title, in which people are locked in cells two at a time, where a platform with delicacies passes by once a day. And this time too, the crux of the matter is that the people who are housed higher up are filling their stomachs, while the men and women in the lower cells are left empty-handed – and in their desperation they allow themselves to commit hideous atrocities.

Of course, we don’t want to spoil anything at this point, as the film does come with one or two surprises. However, if you finish watching the film, we recommend not turning off as soon as the credits roll. Because While the names of the cast members begin to flicker across the screen, a few images are also cut in between – and not without reason! What does that mean? We’ll tell you that in the next paragraph. But Warning, spoilers follow from here!

Spoiler warning: The end credits scene of “The Shaft 2” explained

In the end, Perempuan, played by Milena Smit (“Parallel Mothers”), meets an old acquaintance – Goreng (Ivan Massagué), the protagonist of the first part. And not only that. And not only we know him, but also Perempuan.

The meeting between the two suggests that they were a couple before their time in the shaft. It makes perfect sense that their encounter seems emotionally charged. After all, not only have they just been through a lot, but they’ve obviously already been through a lot during their time together. After all, Perempuan explains right at the beginning of the film that she goes into the shaft because she needs time. Time to forgive yourself. Finally, she reveals in advance that she has killed her (shared) son.

He died in an accident with one of her works of art – the one that later earned her millions. The shaft could have become a kind of self-flagellation therapy for her to come to terms with herself. And the goreng known from part 1? He’s obviously the father of her dead child!

So, in a sense, the circle closes. Everyone can decide for themselves whether they ultimately find this to be brilliant, unnecessary or far-fetched. If you’re more interested in seeing trapped people fighting for life and death, you can look forward to another film on Netflix, which is now included in your subscription:
