The Bernese surprise away against Galatasaray and celebrate a “dream” with their entry into the Champions League.

It was astonishing how calmly the Young Boys, who had recently been so criticized, made it into the Champions League against Galatasaray. In the heated cauldron, the Bernese remained cool – regardless of whether cups were raining down from the stands or the opponent was getting carried away with violence and brawling. In the end, the Swiss champions had the upper hand against the highly decorated Turkish star team.
The protagonists were accordingly proud in the interview with SRF:
- Coach Patrick Frame: “It’s a huge joy. We had to go through the worst and are not where we want to be in the championship. You can see how unpredictable the sport is. It was important to stay calm and work together. Even during the warm-up it was extremely loud. We expected some nasty moments, but they bounced off us. In the first half, we had a problem converting our chances. But as long as we kept a clean sheet, we stayed on schedule. All of the efforts we put in last week were rewarded today.”
- Goalie Marvin Keller: “We prepared well for it. It was a cool experience and a well-deserved qualification. We knew that they would have to come in the second half. We defended in solidarity and practically didn’t allow anything. Big compliments to the whole team. Not everyone can keep a clean sheet here.”
- Goalscorer Alan Virginius: “We were ready – physically and mentally. Taking part in the Champions League is a dream. I would love to play against Real Madrid. Even though they would be a very tough opponent.”
- Striker Silvère Ganvoula: “We knew it would be difficult against their fans. It remained hot until the end. But we concentrated on ourselves. It really is a dream come true. That’s a joy.
- Defender Sandro Lauper: “Before these games, not many people would have expected us. We played more defensively in the second half than we wanted. We should have moved out further from the back. But we always defended well, they hardly had any good chances. In the end, it was important that we didn’t concede a goal.”
