International – Ben Tameifuna (Bordeaux) returns to Tonga selection

Tonga make their Pacific Nations Cup debut against Samoa this Friday, with coach Tevita Tu’ifua recalling prop Ben Tameifuna for the occasion.

While Bordeaux-Bègles will face Leinster in a friendly this weekend, Ben Tameifuna will not be in this gala match. The New Zealand-born pillar has been recalled by his coach Tevita Tu’ifua to play in a Pacific Nations Cup match. Indeed, the Tongans are up against Samoa in this international tournament pitting these two teams against Fiji, but also Japan, Canada and the United States. The Bordeaux forward will even be the captain of the Pacific nation for this meeting.

Already selected 34 times with Tonga, Tameifuna is a core player in the Sea Eagles’ selection. The imposing pillar (1.88m; 151kg) has already played in two World Cups, he even scored two tries in the last edition in France. At 33, he will surely want to make his teammates shine on the occasion of this new competition format, where Tonga will be pitted against their Samoan and Fijian neighbors in a group, before the former is pitted against his counterpart in the second group.
