Surprising but true: Safety Car crashes at Monza

An before the race weekend even began. While the drivers were fulfilling their commercial, media and other obligations, F1, as usual, carried out its track checks. Among them, the recognition of the latter by the medical car and the Safety Car.

A normally calm exercise but which this time took a strange turn. Indeed, the safety car was the protagonist of an accident while negotiating the famous Parabolica, today renamed Curva Alboreto, in homage to Michele Alboreto.

During one of his fast laps, in this case his last, Bernd Mayländer lost control of the Aston Martin Vantage, ending his race against the protection barriers after having crossed the gravel trap. Although the German and his passenger were able to on their own, the vehicle suffered some damage, as shown in the first images from Monza.

« An incident occurred on the track with the FIA Safety Car today (THURSDAY) in Monzathe FIA reported in a statement. Aston Martin is investigating the cause of the incident, but we can confirm that the driver and passenger are okay.. »

Note that the accident will have no impact on the weekend’s progress since a second safety car is available on the circuit, just in case. Better safe than sorry, and luckily more fear than harm, even if Aston Martin must not think the same thing…
