NHL | Jonathan Toews in Winnipeg: a perfect match…next year?

Jonathan Toews, in the uniform of the Winnipeg Jets, his hometown club?

This scenario is certainly not outlandish, reports TSN network informant Pierre LeBrun.

“It might be a perfect match, but for next year. If I understood correctly, Jonathan Toews does not plan to return this season. It’s mainly a question of seeing if he will be ready to return to the NHL next year,” commented LeBrun when questioned by his TSN colleague Gino Reda.

In a magazine interview GQreleased late last month, the former Chicago Blackhawks captain suggested he’s not closing the door on a possible return to NHL play, despite not playing there since the 2022-2023 season in order to regain health.

“The Jets’ prospect is entirely real,” says LeBrun. [Le directeur général] Kevin Cheveldayoff told media in Winnipeg this week that the Jets would be interested in the local player, but the reality is the interest is mutual. I think Jonathan Toews would absolutely see that as a real possibility, but it won’t be this season based on what we’re hearing right now.

“Other teams have also contacted the Toews camp, led by agent Pat Brisson,” LeBrun added.

“For now his idea is to try to come back for next season. »

Now a free agent, Toews has only played 53 games in 2022-2023 due to chronic immune response syndrome and problems related to long COVID. He then amassed 15 goals and 16 assists with the Blackhawks.

Toews is in the final year of an eight-year, $84 million contract he signed with the Blackhawks in 2014 that paid him an average annual salary of $10.5 million.

Toews won the Stanley Cup three times (2010, 2013, 2015) with the Hawks. He also won the Conn Smythe Trophy in 2009-2010 and the Frank Selke Trophy in 2013. He played his entire career with the club that selected him third overall in the 2006 draft. He scored 372 goals and 511 assists in 1067 games.
