Hockey: Friborg is back more than ever in the race for the top 6

Even a month ago, no one would have been crazy enough to imagine that Fribourg-Gottéron could finish the regular season in the top 6 of the National League and thus obtain direct qualification for the play-offs. This scenario is more relevant than ever after the success of the Dragons, Saturday at the BCF Arena, against Berne (2-1 ap).

Since December 22 and the arrival of Lars Leuenberger on the bench, Friborg has been the best team in the country in terms of average points per game and has still not lost a single duel in regulation time. It is thanks to this confidence accumulated over the last few weeks that Gottéron was able to win his third consecutive Zähringer derby.

This allowed Friborg to have a good start to the game, during which they took the lead, deservedly, through Christoph Bertschy (8th, 1-0). Starting behind the defense, the Swiss international had plenty of time to eliminate Adam Reideborn. They should even have doubled the bet, but Lucas Wallmark (20th) missed an empty cage.

The rest of the duel was much more complicated. Lars Leuenberger was even forced to take a timeout in the middle of the second third to break the opponent’s rhythm. Berne still managed to equalize thanks to Victor Ejdsell (52nd, 1-1).

No matter, in Fribourg, the confidence is there and the Dragons won in overtime thanks to Lucas Wallmark (62nd, 2-1).

Fribourg-Gottéron is now four points behind Kloten (6th), five behind Davos (5th) and seven behind Berne (4th). He has a meeting with Langnau on Friday at the BCF Arena.
